Each Scapular medal carries the image of Jesus Christ, as depicted with His Sacred Heart on one side and Our Lady of Mount Carmel on the other.
In 1910, Pope St. Pius X introduced a scapular medal which may be substituted in most cases for any of the various scapulars. Valid enrollment in the scapulars must, however, be made before the substitution. The Medal privilege, granted by the saintly Pope Pius X, was intended only for those who could not wear the cloth Scapular, such as those in the service of their country, those in boiler rooms or similar industrial professions and natives of tropical countries.
