“On April 30, 2010 the Holy See announced recognitio or official approval of the English translation of the third typical edition of The Roman Missal. Many years were spent preparing this translation of The Roman Missal. In fact, it is the first major liturgical book to be issued since March 28, 2001, when the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments (CDWDS) issued Liturgiam Authenticam: The Fifth Instruction on Vernacular Translation of the Roman Liturgy. . . . While no translation is perfect, I do believe that most people will find the translation of the liturgical texts in the third typical edition of The Roman Missal to be an improvement over the texts we had previously been using. It is important to remember that the norms under which the previous translation were composed and approved were different from the norms we currently have in place. After using the former texts for almost 40 years, we now have a better idea of what are qualities and values of the Roman tradition of prayer that we want to preserve in our English translation . . . . I am very grateful to the authors who have contributed to this book of essays.  I hope you find the contributions of these authors will assist you in exploring the many improvements that you will find in the third typical edition of The Roman Missal.
