from the Veronese Statuary Collection
This charming 11 inch tall statue of the saint of Assisi is cast in resin and then clad in cold cast bronze. Each piece is then lightly painted in soft color highlights.
St Francis showed respect or all of God's creation. This statue is inspired by the story of his encounter with the birds from the "Fioretti" ("Little Flowers"). It is said that, one day, while Francis was travelling with some companions, they happened upon a place in the road where birds filled the trees on either side. Francis told his companions to "wait for me while I go to preach to my sisters the birds." Upon which the birds surrounded him, and stayed by the power of his voice or his preaching, not one of them flew away.
